Project Overview
The ministry of energy and water resources in partnership with unicef is planning to carry out the rehabilitation and upgrading of water schemes in Dhobley and Afmadow districts in Lower Juba province. The project aims to improve access to water services for the communities in Afmadow and Dhobley towns.
Access to clean and safe water is crucial for the health and well-being of communities. In the Afmadow district, communities primarily depend on groundwater from boreholes and shallow wells. This project aims to rehabilitate and upgrade twenty-nine water systems to enhance water service accessibility. The ministry has conducted a rapid assessment to identify which water schemes need improvement.
Project Rehabilitation Works
- Repair of the water tanks
- Replacement of pipe works
Servicing of generators (Change fuel, oil and air filters as well as oil) - Construction of communal water points.
- Fencing of shallow wells and borehole sites.
- Construction of new 50m3 tanks.
- Pipeline extension and construction of cattle trough and water kiosks.
- Extension of pipeline to Hubi village
Supply and install 63mm HDPE pipeline including all the necessary fittings and appurtenances. - Supply and install 11kw submersible pumps complete with its motor and associated accessories Servicing of the generator
Upgrading of Water Schemes
- Construction of Animal Water Troughs.
- Cleaning and changing cables of Solar Systems.
- Supply and installation 11kw submersible pumps including the high density UPVC drawdown pipes.
- Supply and install 45Kva generator including connection cables.
- Construction of water kiosks including distribution pipe (50mm HDPE PN 6)
- Construction of 25m3 elevated water tanks including distribution network and 2nr water kiosk.
- Construction of standard caretaker rooms.
- Construction of elevated RC tank
Project Geographic Coverage
The Project target Geographical Area is Dhobley and Afmadow Districts, Lower juba Region - Jubaland State of Somalia.
Project Achievements
1. Construction & Rehabilitation of shallow wells
The Construction & rehabilitation of these shallow wells will be strategically done to ensure reliable access to clean water while protecting against contamination. They will be equipped with necessary safeguards to maintain water quality.
2. Electromechanical Works and Pump Installations:
Various electromechanical works will include the installation of pumps, submersible, designed to efficiently extract and distribute water from the wells to storage tank.
3. Rising and Distribution Water Mains
A network of rising mains and distribution pipelines will be laid out to transport water from the wells to storage facilities.
4. Construction & Rehabilitation of Elevated Tanks
Construction & Rehabilitation of elevated water tanks to provide storage and maintain water pressure for consistent distribution.
5. Rehabilitation of communal water kiosks:
The Existing Water Kiosks will be rehabiliitated and additional new ones will be Construction within the community to provide easily accessible points for residents to collect water, reducing the need for long-distance travel and improving convenience.
Construction of Animal Troughs
Animal troughs were constructed to beneift the lifestock as part of the project components
