Emergency Response
Emergency response in Dolow District of Gedo Region - Jubaland September 2024
Project Overview
Dolow is a town in the southwestern Gedo region of Somalia, with an estimated population of about 200,000. Situated along the Jubba River and located roughly 50 kilometres north of Luuq near the Somali Region in Ethiopia, the town also borders the Balet-Hawo District adjacent to Kenya’s Northeastern Province. Its strategic location along key trade routes and proximity to neighboring regions bolster economic activities and stability, making Dolow a vital gateway for cross-border commerce. However, these advantages come with challenges, as the town faces environmental threats and a steady influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs), factors that complicate its rapid development and overall resilience.
LADAN is a substantial IDP camp within Dolow, located approximately 2–3 kilometres from the main town center in the Gedo Region of Jubaland. The camp, set in a semi-arid area with a hot, dry climate and an annual rainfall ranging from 50 to 150 millimetres, houses an estimated 3,500 households that largely rely on humanitarian assistance due to limited livelihood opportunities. Water scarcity is a persistent challenge, especially during the dry season when river and well levels fall, prompting residents to adopt conservation practices such as constructing water storage systems (Berkad) and using water-efficient irrigation techniques. The Dawa River, which forms part of Somalia’s border with Ethiopia, underscores the region’s reliance on transboundary water resources. A comprehensive assessment by the Jubaland Ministry of Energy and Water Resources revealed that the LADAN camp lacks access to safe and clean water. In response, the ministry has initiated rapid interventions to establish a water scheme and recommended the development of flood-proof, high-yield, river-recharged shallow wells. The project site is precisely located at coordinates Lat: 4.155271, Long: 42.108209.
Project Geographic Coverage
The Project target Geographical Area is Dolow District, Gedo Region - Jubaland State of Somalia.
Project Components
1. Construction of 2 Nr. new high yield wells, flood-proof:
These wells will be strategically located to ensure reliable access to river recharged along river Dawa River while protecting against contamination. They will be equipped with necessary safeguards to maintain water quality.
2. Electromechanical Works and Pump Installations:
Various electromechanical works will include the installation of pumps, submersible, designed to efficiently extract and distribute water from the wells to storage tank.
3. Rising and Distribution Water Mains:
A network of rising mains and distribution pipelines will be laid out to transport water from the wells to storage facility to various parts of LADAN IDP camp, ensuring equitable access to clean water throughout the target community.
4. Elevated Concrete Tank (50m³):
An elevated concrete tank with a capacity of 50 cubic meters will be constructed to provide storage and maintain water pressure for consistent distribution.
5. Construction of 6 Nr. new communal water kiosks:
Water kiosks will be strategically placed within the community to provide easily accessible points for residents to collect water, reducing the need for long-distance travel and improving convenience.
6. Capacity Building
Formation of community water management committees and capacity building for water management on water chlorination, solar operation and management.
7.Chlorination
Training of water chlorinators and chlorination of water sources.
