Rehabilitation of Iftin Borehole-Dhobley
Somalia Water for Rural Resilience Project (Barwaaqo Project) (P177627) February 2025
Project Overview
The Ministry of Energy & Water Resources of Jubaland has implemented iftin Borehole Rehabilitation in Dhobley district, it is one of the locations designated for development under the Barwaaqo Project. The Iftin Borehole Rehabilitation Project has been successfully completed, delivering critical water infrastructure to the community. This Project is Funded by the World bank , Supported by the Ministry of Energy & Water Resources of Federal Government of Somalia and its directly implemented by the Ministry of Energy & Water Resources of Jubaland State of Somalia.
The project aimed to improve access to clean and reliable water for both human consumption and livestock, while also ensuring sustainable water management through the provision of maintenance tools and renewable energy systems. The project activities included the construction of animal troughs, an elevated water tank, a watchman house, a water kiosk, and the installation of a submersible pump, generator, and solar system.
The project has significantly enhanced the quality of life for the community by providing a reliable water source, reducing the burden of water collection, and supporting livestock health. The inclusion of a solar system and maintenance tools ensures the long-term sustainability of the borehole.

Project achievements
1. Construction of Three Animal Troughs:
Built to serve cattle, sheep, and camels with durable materials to withstand heavy use and minimize water spillage.
2. Installation of a 30-Cubic Meter Elevated Tank:
Erected 6 meters above ground to ensure consistent water pressure and gravity-fed distribution for human and livestock systems.
3. Construction of a Watchman House with Integrated Water Kiosk:
The watchman house safeguards equipment, while the attached water kiosk includes seven taps for clean and orderly water access, reducing queues and contamination risks.
4.Installation of a High-Capacity Submersible Pump:
Installed to maximize the borehole's water yield, ensuring a reliable supply for the community.
5. Implementation of a Hybrid Power System: Solar panels (capacity:
6KW) installed for sustainable daytime operation, with a backup 30kva Generator ensuring uninterrupted power during low sunlight or high demand.
6. Provision of a Maintenance Toolkit:
Included essential tools like wrenches, pipe cutters, sealants, and safety gear to enable routine maintenance and minor repairs.
